PeeWee tryouts begin tonight!

REMINDER

Pee Wee tryouts begin tonight at 7:00 PM at Ristuccia Arena.  If you have not already done so, please register on-line today.  Also be reminded that the tryout fee of $100 is due prior to getting on the ice, with no exceptions, and the registration fee is non-refundable in the event that your child declines a position on his or her assigned team.

As of 10:00 AM today, twenty-two players have registered for placement on a Pee Wee team. Historically, there have always been some last minute registrations and “walk-ins”, so we are optimistic that we will have 25 to 30 registrants, which is optimal for two teams.

Please arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in. We look forward to seeing you at the rink tonight.

Thank you,

WYHA BOD

WYHA Survey Results and Response

We want to thank all the parents that took the time to complete the WYH surveys. Two surveys were emailed, one to parents with children currently playing WYH and another for those who no longer had children playing WYH. This feedback has given us very good insight into issues that most concern the WYH community. We want to update you on the top issues outlined in the surveys and provide some details on our ongoing efforts to improve Wilmington Youth Hockey.

Rink & Schedule

  • Unfortunately, we have little control over Ristuccia ice times
    • Ristuccia rink management assigns sheets of ice during the contract process
    • While we make requests during the contracting process, we ultimately have little control over the days/times offered within our contract as we compete with other organizations for ice time
    • Assigned days/times can change during the year based on the needs of rink management – at their discretion
    • No other rink in the area has enough available ice time to serve the organization's needs.
  • The WYH board does their best to maintain consistent practice days/times and distribute contracted times across teams.
  • We work to publish practice schedules as far in advance as possible, however our ability to give advance notice is substantially limited, as we cannot schedule practices until we receive the Valley Hockey League (VHL) game schedule updates.  For the 2019-20 season, the WYH BOD is meeting with the new Ristuccia Rink ownership and will communicate this impact. We understand the value of advanced notice and consistency and work to provide as much of both as possible given our constraints.Typically we are able to update our practice schedule within 1-2 days of receiving updated VHL game schedules.

Coaching

  • We proposed and began implementing a player evaluation process to ensure consistency for all levels.
  • We strictly enforce Mass Hockey and USA Hockey coaching requirements for all coaches, at all levels, without exception.  Our coaches take approximately eight hours of on-line training modules for each age level that they coach; they attend "in-person" classes to be certified at each level; and they must pass a "Safe Sport" Certification as required by USA Hockey.  You can find more details about USA Hockey coaching requirements at the USA Hockey website https://www.usahockey.com/coachingcertification
  • Many of our coaches have played and coached at a high level.  We are fortunate to have numerous coaches that have played or coached at the high school and college level. They regularly exchange ideas about effective ice time utilization and effective skill development by sharing a myriad of drills and small area games with each other.  WYH also makes various USA Hockey and other coaching resources, including detailed practice plans, available electronically and in hard copy.
  • WYH provides the tools coaches need to make them successful and maintain consistent communication with their teams.

Lack of schedule visibility

  • The Valley Hockey League (VHL) publishes regular season and playoff schedules.
  • The season begins with Parity, which lasts for 5 weeks, with the goal of placing teams in competitive divisions.
  • Game schedules are published by VHL in batches, providing the opportunity to re-assess all teams and move them to more, or less, competitive division as necessary.
  • This system is invaluable to ensure that teams are ultimately placed in a competitive position as they enter the playoff season.  Unfortunately, it results in a degree of uncertainty and "short notice" with regard to the VHL game schedule.
  • WYH Board of Directors frequently requests better visibility and earlier publishing of schedules, but are reliant on VHL to publish this information.

Ice Time

  • Ice time is distributed consistently across all teams, striving for 2 practices per week.
  • Practice frequency is greatest at the beginning and the end of the season due to more ice availability, given high school hockey season and asper our contract.
  • Each team plays from 35 to 45 regular season games, depending on the season.
  • We try to spread less optimal times across all levels to share the burden of the ice availability in our contract.

Thank you,

WYHA BOD
