A Message from WYHA's President

Dear Wilmington Youth Hockey Parents,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 hockey season.  I hope that each of you were able to enjoy some summer activities during the brief off-season that we, as hockey parents, get to enjoy each year.

I would like to introduce myself to all those who do not know me.  My name is Scott Audette, and I was recently elected to serve as the President of Wilmington Youth Hockey.  I have been on the board since the 2013 season and have served in many positions including the valley league representative, buzzer/mini-mite director, squirt director, and bantam director.  I grew up in Wilmington, playing in the Wilmington Youth Hockey program.  I have been playing the sport of hockey for over 30 years and coaching for the better part of the last 12 years. I am a Level 4 USA Hockey certified coach and a Level 1 USA Hockey certified referee.

This year, the organization is facing several challenges.  We experienced a loss of over 100 hundred players from the previous season, mostly at the squirt and bantam levels.  With the loss of so many players, the program will have a large decrease in revenue this season.  We are consistently one of the least expensive programs in the area, being around $400 to $800 dollars cheaper than the surrounding towns and $1,000 to $1,400 cheaper than the club teams in the area.  That said, with the number of teams we have at all levels, most will experience increased ice time per week, rivaling the club teams for 2/3rd the cost.  Fundraising is going to be a must this season.  The program is looking at a financial gap of nearly $50,000 this season.  This deficit reflects a combination of the drop in player registration and the rink management raising the cost of ice 6% from last season, which is now $365 per fifty-minute sheet of ice.

Shelly Sainato and Monica Archer head the Fundraising Committee.  They do a great job, but they cannot do it alone.  They need assistance with managing and promoting the WYHA Raffle program, and are looking for other creative ideas on how to reduce the budget deficit.  We must assume going forward that the cost of ice will continue to increase, so we need to raise funds and increase enrollment to sustain this program.  We have many ideas on the table to help further develop our young hockey players but need your support to accomplish this goal.  If you are available to help with the fundraising initiative, please reach out to Shelly at ssainato@comcast.net. If you would like to make a personal or corporate tax deductible donation, one hundred percent of your support will be used to offset this year's operating deficit.

We are fortunate enough to have dedicated hockey coaches who volunteer their time every week to their team and the program.  A number of coaches have played at division 1 NCAA and other college hockey programs, and others have played through high school.  All of our coaches love the game of hockey, enjoy passing on their knowledge to your sons and daughters and above all, want the kids to have fun.

Given the current operating deficit, and the talented coaching staff that we have at our disposal, the Board of Directors recently voted to forego the expense of hiring outside vendors to run our Skills program.  Instead, we will rely on our dedicated and capable coaches to run this program for the 2018-19 season.  Going forward, these Skills sessions will be included on the multi-schedule link found on the organization website

My goal, and the goal of the extremely dedicated and energetic Boards of Directors, is to grow this program back to the robust program of a few years ago.  I invite you to attend a Board of Directors meeting to hear more about the program and to be a part of the conversation – all are welcome and encouraged to attend.  We meet the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 7:30 pm in the 4th of July Building, across from the town common.   The agenda is posted on the WYHA website no later than Tuesday of that week.

I am excited about the 2018-19 season, and I look forward to working with all of you to grow this great program, together.

2018/19 Mini-Mite Registration Now Open!

To the WYHA Community,

Mini-Mites Registration is now open.  The program will begin on September 29, 2018.  Full program details are below.

Please register at WYHA REGISTER NOW!!!

Mini-Mites - Birth Years 2010 and younger

Start Date:  September 29, 2018

All Skaters/players must be registered with USA Hockey, the cost is $48.00 per player (see website for updated costs), this is not refundable, please Click Here for registration information.

Projected Ice Time:  Twice a week (with some exceptions, please stay current with Schedule on Website)

Saturday 7:00am to 7:50am (subject to change prior to the start of the season)
Sunday 1:30pm to 2:50pm (subject to change prior to the start of the season)
exceptions include additional cross ice local games and tournaments

Location: Ristuccia Arena, 190 Main Street, Wilmington, MA 01887

This program is an in-house, fun introduction to the game of hockey with an emphasis on skills: stops & starts, edgework, and puck handling.  There are typically two practices a week and as the season progresses, Saturday is dedicated to skill building and Sunday is dedicated to cross ice 3v3 scrimmaging.  Other potential opportunities during the season, depending on timing and availability, include local tournaments and half ice scrimmaging with neighboring programs.  Possible call-ups to mite travel team when players are needed based on coach recommendations.

Goals of this level:

Develop skating and puck control skills of the individual player
Introduce basic shooting and passing skills
Introduce goalie position
Introduce basic game play

Throughout the year, players will participate in a goalie rotation with WYH providing the equipment for the players to try the goalie position. During the cross ice scrimmages, all emphasis is put on going after the puck and not positional play.  During half ice or full ice scrimmages more emphasis will be put on positional play. The primary goal is to develop a solid foundation of skating and puck handling skills to build on in the upper levels of Wilmington Youth Hockey.

Participants should have skating experience
Ideally have completed a Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Program
Skaters are required to bring their own equipment:
Skates, Helmet, Stick, Elbow Pads, Shoulder Pads, Neck guard, Knee/Shin Pads, Pants, Socks, and Shirt
